Lana Del Rey seemingly disses Ethel Cain on new song snippet
“Ethel Cain hated my Instagram post, think it’s cute reenacting my Chicago post.”
Lana Del Rey has previewed a new song that appears to be critical of Ethel Cain.
Del Rey shared a clip of herself sitting in her car and listening to an unreleased song on social media on Wednesday (August 13). In the clip, which was captured for posterity by multiple fan accounts, the singer mouths along to the words, including the line “Ethel Cain hated my Instagram post, think it’s cute reenacting my Chicago post.” The song continues: “Hard to roll in slow motion/ Hard to say no to precaution/ Hard to stop when it’s like an ocean/ Not afraid to say I’m going down in flames.”
Fans have speculated that Del Rey's lyrics refer to Salem musician Jack Donoghue, with whom both artists have been pictured. Del Rey shared a picture of herself with Donoghue outside Cook County Jail in 2022 when the pair were rumored to be dating. Cain subsequently shared a picture of herself with him, before deleting it soon after.
Another lyric in the unreleased song snippet caught fans attention, with Del Rey singing: “The most famous girl at the Waffle House/ I don’t regret it/ The most famous girl at the Waffle House”. This is suspected to be a reference to a 2022 New York Times profile of Cain that was headlined “The Most Famous Girl At The Waffle House.”
The following year Del Rey was spotted serving coffee at a branch of Waffle House, in Birmingham, Alabama.
A few hours after Del Rey shared the song snippet, Cain posted to her Instagram story alleging that the pop star had blocked her on the platform.
Del Rey later took to the comment section of a Pop Base Instagram post to further elaborate on her beef with Cain: "I didn't know who Ethel was until a few years ago — when someone brought to my attention the disturbing and graphic side-by-side images she would often put up of me next to unflattering creatures and cartoon characters making constant comments about my weight, I was confused at what she was getting at."
Del Rey is building up to the release of her next album, The Right Person Will Stay. The album was originally titled Lasso and was scheduled for release in May. A new release date remains TBC.
She has released two songs from the country project so far, "Bluebird" and "Henry, Come On."
Ethel Cain, meanwhile, released her latest album Willoughby Tucker, I Will Always Love You on August 8.
