Rap Blog: Take a smoke break with mynameisntjmack
Listen to the Virginian rapper’s new single “american spirit.”
Rap Blog is a weekly showcase of a standout rap song.
Mynameisntjmack’s (almost) eponymous May debut, mynameisnt, was like eavesdropping on live-jazz therapy sessions about fame with Blu and Mick Jenkins, but the rapper seems to have grown less concerned with that journey on his recent singles. Sure, September’s “Oaxaca” was still frantic about grinding toward his dreams, but on last month's "cavalier," it was homesickness for his native Virginia that weighed on his shoulders about as heavily as Alo-outfitted women in Los Angeles worrying about their matcha budget (i.e. a lot).
His latest, the hazy "american spirit," is even more lax about his future, less concerned with telling a story than catching a vibe. There's still a loose narrative here: something impressionistic about getting too turnt at a party and sending a late-night text to someone he's sure will call him back — eventually. Produced by Pivot Gang stalwart DaeDae, the track has just enough momentum to keep up a bounce while strolling along at a gentle clip, unhurried and, for once, enjoying every moment.
