Beth Gibbons announces solo album, shares “Floating On A Moment”
The Portishead singer-songwriter’s album Lives Outgrown is out May 17 via Domino.
Portishead's Beth Gibbons has revealed details of her decade-in-the-making solo album, titled Lives Outgrown. The project will see its release on May 19 via Domino, and today you can hear its lead single "Floating On A Moment."
In a press statement, Gibbons says that the album was inspired by "motherhood, anxiety and menopause" as well as "lots of goodbyes" in her life. “I realized what life was like with no hope,” she writes. “And that was a sadness I’d never felt. Before, I had the ability to change my future, but when you’re up against your body, you can’t make it do something it doesn’t want to do.”
“People started dying,” she continues. “When you’re young, you never know the endings, you don’t know how it’s going to pan out. You think: we’re going to get beyond this. It’s going to get better. Some endings are hard to digest... Now I’ve come out of the other end, I just think, you’ve got to be brave."
Below, you can watch the music video for "Floating On A Moment," directed by Tony Oursler. "When I first heard ‘Floating On A Moment,’" Oursler says, "it literally transported me from place to place, filling me with kaleidoscopic emotions and visions. If possible, I wanted to capture that psychic liquid in this video."
