Mitski is writing the music for a Queen’s Gambit Broadway show
The novel turned Netflix show is making its next move to the stage.
The hit Netflix series The Queen's Gambit is being turned into a Broadway musical with Mitski on board to write the songs.
The Queen's Gambit is based on Walter Tevis’ 1983 novel. The Netflix series debuted in 2020 and featured Anya Taylor-Joy in the lead role. It tells the story of Beth Harmon, a fictional chess prodigy as she rises through the ranks of the board game world while struggling with drug and alcohol issues.
"Before Level Forward even brought the idea of making a musical of The Queen’s Gambit, I was a fan of the Netflix show, and an even greater fan of the original novel. So I was already determined to be a member of this team,” Mitski said in a statement.
The Queen’s Gambit Broadway show is written by Eboni Booth and will be directed by Whitney White. In her statement, Mitski said her interest in the opportunity was cemented by meeting the team: "I absolutely had to be a part of this! I am ecstatic to get to work with all of these amazing creatives, who’ve each built beautiful and unique repertoires of their own."
Mitski's latest album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, was released in September. She will take the album on the road for a tour of seated theater shows starting in January 2024.
