Watch Bad Bunny in the trailer for the wrestling biopic Cassandro
Gael García Bernal stars in the Roger Ross Williams-directed film, set to be released in theaters on September 15.
Bad Bunny will merge his long-standing passion for wrestling with his more recent, likely far more lucrative passion for acting with a role in the upcoming film Cassandro, and the film’s first trailer is out today. Watch it above via Stereogum.
The film is a biopic based on the life and career of Saúl Armendáriz, a Mexican-American wrestler who in 1989 began performing under the name Cassandro (Cassandro is played in the film by Gael García Bernal). Cassandro was what’s known in the wrestling world as an “exótico,” a male performer who may wear drag and use stereotypes of queer mannerisms and behavior. Unlike almost all other wrestlers, Cassandro was gay, and over the years managed to develop a cult following in the wrestling circuit.
Alongside Bernal and Bad Bunny, Roberta Colindrez, Perla De La Rosa, and Joaquín Cosío also appear, as well as real-life wrestler El Hijo Del Santo. Cassandro is directed by Roger Ross Williams and is out in theaters on September 15 and available to stream on Amazon Prime on September 22.
This year, Bad Bunny appeared in the action thriller Bullet Train alongside Brad Pitt. He’s also slated to star as the Marvel Comics wrestling hero El Muerto, though that film’s release date has been pushed from January 12 to TBD.
