Kim Petras enlists Nicki Minaj for “Alone”
The new track prominently samples Alice Deejay’s ’90s club hit “Better Off Alone.”
Kim Petras is best known as the featured artist on Sam Smith's inescapable "Unholy," a 2022 track that won the Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Vocal Performance (making Petras the first openly trans person to win a Grammy). Her third single since "Unholy" broke pop charts around the world is out today, and it's a Nicki Minaj-featuring track called “Alone."
The song heavily interpolates "Better Off Alone," the 1999 Eurodance hit from the Dutch group Alice Deejay, placing "Alone" firmly in the ongoing trend of contemporary pop hits sampling club bangers from years past. The Nicki Minaj verse, fierce yet tempered thanks to the surrounding bubblegum, brings back memories of her 2010 debut Pink Friday for an added dose of nostalgia. Listen below.
