Konshens, Spice, and Rvssian join forces on “Pay For It”
The song is set to appear on Konshens’ upcoming album, Red Reign.
If anyone knows a thing or two about making, having, and spending money, it's dancehall stars Konshens and
Spice, and superproducer Rvssian. Today, the dancehall heavyweights share "Pay For It," an ode to providing the finer things in life in the name of love—or at least lust. Atop Rvssian's breezy riddim, Konshens and Spice trade brash bars about the cost of affection, both making their points with their equally commanding flows.
“Me and Rvssian decided we needed to get one ah dem dancehall ballad deh,” Konshens said about the song in a statement. “If you check all the biggest dancehall songs, [they] have a nice, melodic hook and then you go into the verse and give them the authentic dancehall deejaying. We decided this needs something else and that was the Queen of Dancehall herself.” The song is set to appear on Konshens' upcoming album Red Reign, and follows the release of "Can't Stay Sober" from earlier this year.
In the clip's playful visuals, viewers start out in Half-Way Tree, right in the bustling heart of Kingston, Jamaica. Konshens plays a coaster bus fare collector making his move on Spice, an uptight and aloof passenger who needs more than sweet talk to hold her attention. The buses serve as more than a convenient setting for the clip, as the history of dancehall itself can, in some ways, be tied to the transit system thanks to its ability to connect the island's rural areas to its vibrant city centers. "Since the genre’s birth decades ago, these renegade minibuses have played a pivotal role in spreading dancehall across the island," reads the track's press release.
