Jidenna grapples with spirits in “Black Magic Hour”
The single is set to be part of a genre-bending compilation and documentary, African On All Sides.
Jidenna has shared his latest single "Black Magic Hour," the first from the compilation project African On All Sides set to drop later this year. The album, alongside an accompanying documentary, hopes to seamlessly blend artists across a host of diasporic genres and industries in Africa, the U.S., Latin America, and the West Indies. Inspired by everything from traditional Afrobeat, dancehall, Latin trap, R&B, Hip Hop, and beyond, Jidenna will appear along with artists like Lord Afrixana, who wrote "Water" and "Don't Jealous Me" from Beyoncé's The Gift, Nigeria’s PsychoYP, and Nasty C.
In the visuals, viewers follow the Jidenna's journey after a chance meeting with an ancestral spirit, turning his life upside down in the process. "I think in these times the song becomes important because what I'm really speaking to is centralizing our power in a way that we channel our economic worth and we channel our spiritual worth into our lifestyle," Jidenna explained in an email to The FADER. "I don't believe that we can have the economic progress that we need to empower communities without spiritual progression."
