THEY. and Tinashe link up for the throwback R&B jam “Play Fight”
From the group’s forthcoming project The Amanda Tape.
Los Angeles-based R&B duo THEY. will release their second full-length project, The Amanda Tape, later this year. The mixtape is the group's next step after wildly successful two-year stretch, beginning with a FADER Gen F feature and peaking with their Dillon Francis collaboration "Till I Die" being featured as the theme song for Madden 20. The first song from The Amanda Tape, "Count Me In," was released back in June, and now the duo are premiering the project's second single. "Play Fight," a collaboration with Tinashe, is the type of throwback R&B track that THEY. have started to master, a nod to late-'90s and early-'00s artists like Blu Cantrell and even Craig David.
"We're always trying to channel the energy of the songs I grew up with into something fresh and new," THEY.'s wrote in an email to The FADER. "This one definitely draws from a lot of the feel-good summer records from the early 00’s."
The collaboration with Tinashe was an intentional look back into the past as well. "We love songs that have both the male and female perspective, like Ja Rule and Ashanti, or Nelly and Kelly Rowland," they continued. "We’ve been fans of Tinashe for a minute and once she sent her verse back over to us we knew we had something special."
