Rita Indiana returns with a giant appetite for destruction in her “Como Un Dragón” video
The Dominican artist will release her first album in 10 years.
The end of Rita Indiana's final verse on "Como Un Dragón" ends with a flex most artists can't pull off. It roughly translates to, "In the same time it took you to write a chorus/I wrote five novels." She turned down making more music years ago to pursue her first love of writing, but has recently decided to get some thoughts off her chest.
The song, which is a mix of metal and dembow, features several bars from Indiana that are reminiscent of mixtape Weezy, commenting on the sad state of the rap game and vowing to clean up the mess on her own. The Noelia Quintero-directed video mashed paper and 3D animation to create a diabolic world where Indiana is a mad scientist feeding her one-eyed dragon.
In an email, Indiana explained how this first single sets the tone for the new project: "There is a darkness cloaked in comedy. It has layers of Caribbean folklore and electronica. The result reflects my admiration for the theatricality of bands such as Os Mutantes, Aramis Camilo, and Iron Maiden." Quintero also went into the inspiration for the video: "I mixed the trauma of post-Hurricane Maria, German expressionist cinema and an avalanche of content gathered over the past 10 years. In this universe, living beings coexist with lethal technology which La Montra [Indiana] develops in her musical lab in this new album, Mandinga Times."
"Como Un Dragón" will be on her upcoming album Mandinga Times which will be released this June. It is entirely produced by Eduardo Cabra of Calle 13.
