Hear Rina Sawayama skewer late capitalism on her new single “XS”

It’s the latest song from her debut album, SAWAYAMA.

March 02, 2020

Next month, we'll finally get to hear Rina Sawayama's debut album SAWAYAMA in its entirety. She's already offered a handful of contrasting singles off the track list, from the nu-metal of "STFU," to the couture-wielding funk of "Comme des Garcons," and today she's sharing one more in "XS." It's a return to the early aughts pop sound that defined her last project, 2017's RINA, but the subject matter is very much grounded in the present day.

"'XS' is a song that mocks capitalism in a sinking world," Sawayama wrote in a press release. "Given that we all know global climate change is accelerating and human extinction is a very real possibility within our lifetime it seemed hilarious to me that brands were still coming out with new makeup palettes every month and public figures were doing a gigantic house tour of their gated property in Calabasas in the same week as doing a 'sad about Australian wild fires' Instagram post... We're all hypocrites because we are all capitalists, and it's a trap that I don't see us getting out of."

Hear "XS" for yourself, and peep Rina Sawayama's forthcoming tour itinerary, below. SAWAYAMA is out April 17 via Dirty Hit.
