On Talib Kweli’s podcast, El-P discussed white rappers’ obligation to address race

Rapper and producer El-P was interviewed on a new episode of Talib Kweli’s podcast, People’s Party. During the interview, El-P spoke about the obligation he feels as a white rapper to address race through his music, Uproxx notes. “If I hadn’t had rap music,” he reportedly said, “I don’t know, as a middle-class white kid, how long it would have taken me to be exposed to the truth. It helped in the lifting of the veil.”

“Rap has done that for a lot [of people],” Kweli responded, according to Uproxx. El-P continued, “People can be fans of hip-hop…but if empathy and connection don’t come with it, what’s the goddamn point?”
