Snoop Dogg says Top Dawg Entertainment is a “better version” of Death Row
The rapper made the comments over the weekend at REVOLT Summit L.A.
Music and culture site REVOLT held its first ever REVOLT Summit L.A. over the weekend at The Magic Box in downtown Los Angeles. Snoop Dogg was a moderator of a panel discussing local label and rap juggernaut Top Dawg Entertainment, home to Kendrick Lamar, SZA, and many more. The label's accomplishments, Snoop said during the panel, make the TDE a “better version” of Death Row Records, the controversial West Coast label Snoop signed to for his debut album Doggystyle in 1993.
Terrence Louis Henderson Jr., the TDE executive known as Punch, tweeted that he was "humbled" by Snoop's words. See his tweet below via Variety:
Punch, who sat on the panel with Jay Rock, artist development executive Moosa, and Brandon “Big B” Tiffith, offered some insight into what he's looking for out of aspiring artists. “It’s different for everybody," he said. "Me personally, it’s originality. Something that’s different and stands out. I’m looking at work ethic after that. You can be great but if you don’t work, that’s the worst thing in the world. You can’t get that going.”
Death Row Records may soon be making a comeback. This month, Death Row founder Suge Knight sold the rights to his life story to R&B artist and entrepreneur Ray J. Knight is currently serving a 28-year prison sentence for voluntary manslaughter.
