Charli XCX covers Spice Girls’ “Wannabe,” teases “experimental” album
Charli XCX covered a Spice Girls classic and teased XCX3 on the weekend.
Charli XCX hit Middleborough, England, for the BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend over the past couple of days and took some time out of her busy schedule of performing "We Can't Stop" with Miley Cyrus to cover a Spice Girls classic and tease her impending untitled third full-length. Between her own tracks like "I Love It" and "1999," Charli surprised the audience with a cover of the iconic girl-group's "Wannabe"—a timely choice considering the recently-reunited Spice Girls began their reunion tour last weekend (to... interesting reviews.) Charli recently released the Lizzo collaboration "Blame It On Your Love" — a reworking of 2017's Pop 2 track "Track 10" — as the first single from her long-awaited (and perpetually postponed) as-yet-untitled third album. Speaking to NME about the follow up to 2014's Sucker, Charli described the album as "experimental," telling the magazine that A.G. Cook and Nomack are working on the record. "Since the mixtapes, I’ve really wanted to push my sound and push pop as far as it can go," the told the magazine. "I feel really proud of the music that I’ve made, so I really want the songs to have as much of a moment individually as possible."
