The-Dream on Jacquees calling himself “The King of R&B:” “That’s how you gotta talk”
The R&B legend discussed braggadocio and his upcoming project Ménage à Trois: Sextape Vol. 1, 2, 3.
The-Dream stopped by Beats 1 on Apple Music on Thursday to discuss his upcoming project Ménage à Trois: Sextape Vol. 1, 2, 3, but the R&B legend also gave his thoughts on a big debate in the music world.
Jacquees has faced blowback since proclaiming himself "The King of R&B," with contemporaries like Trey Songz taking issue with his comments. The debate even led to a very uncomfortable interaction with elder statesmen Keith Sweat. Beats 1 host Ebro Darden asked The-Dream, who regularly calls himself "The King," for his thoughts - he dismissed the entire controversy and told a great story about writing "Single Ladies" for Beyoncé. Read below:
"[Jacquees] said he the king. You gotta be the king man, you know. That's how you gotta talk man. You gotta talk that way. I did the same thing before I wrote 'Single Ladies.' I walked in the studio and I was known for talking myself into a corner. I was like, 'I have to have it.' If it's not like that, I won't build up to that place, and everybody took that for as me being asinine at the time. They didn't know like ... No, he's trying to psych himself out to do some great thing.
"That was... how I dealt with pressure and everything. So I walked into the studio, [and said] 'I don't know who got the single in here, but you ain't got it no more.' I didn't know what I was going to write."
Ménage à Trois: Sextape Vol. 1, 2, 3 is out Friday December 21. Read The FADER's interview with Jacquees here.
