A documentary on designer Martin Margiela is coming out next year
“Extraordinarily, it’s the first time Margiela has agreed to be part of any film about his life or work.”
Martin Margiela, the designer behind the couture fashion house Maison Margiela, is a living mystery. The Belgian designer is extremely private — there has yet to be an official photograph released of him — so an upcoming documentary about his story and made in cooperation with him is, well, a big deal.
Without Compromise will follow Margiela's career, from the avante-garde Antwerp movement to his current success. The Reiner Holzemer-directed film will be distributed by Dogwoof, a UK film distribution company also responsible for major fashion documentaries like Dries, which followed Belgian designer Dries Van Noten, and handled sales for Lorna Tucker’s Vivienne Westwood film Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist.
“We are thrilled to work on the story of such an enigmatic and mysterious designer," said Dogwoof's head of sales, Ana Vicente, to Variety. "Even more so given that extraordinarily, it’s the first time Margiela has agreed to be part of any film about his life or work.”
Without Compromise is set for a 2019 release, and Dogwoof has plans to present the film at Cannes.
