Killer Mike defends right to bear arms in NRA TV segment
“I’m African-American. You know, 54 years out of apartheid. I’m very pro-Second Amendment, this is why..”
Killer Mike appeared in an NRA TV interview that was released on Thursday in which the rapper defended gun ownership in America. In a segment hosted by guns rights activist Colion Noir, the two spoke about Mike's stance on owning guns, and the Atlanta bred rapper explained that he is a gun owning citizen and expressed his support of ownership. We are a gun-owning family. We are a family where my sister farms. "We are a family where we'll fish, we'll hunt. But we are not a family that jumps on every single thing an ally of ours does because some stuff we just don't agree with," he said after explaining that he believed his kids shouldn't participate in last week's national school walk out which was organized to create conversation for gun reform.
After sharing that celebrities are often pressured into making decisions and publicly supporting political issues by radio stations, Mike also spoke about being asked about refusing to support an anti-bullying campaign created by a radio station by explaining that kids have been raised to believe that everybody gets a trophy in life, "We are raising a generation of kids where everyone gets a trophy. But in real life, everyone don’t get a trophy. In real life, the cops don’t come on time. In real life, depending on where you live, you’re not gonna have the time to try to logic your way out of something.”
The interview caught some negative criticism online as users hit Killer Mike on Twitter. The rapper stood his ground and further backed his points shared in the interview by saying, “Voicing an opinion telling African Americans To own and train with fire arms in a country that allows public servants to kill them is stupid now... ok.”
The Run The Jewels rapper is one of music's most vocal critics of American politics and not only raps about the political sphere, but has been a heavy activist. Mike sided with democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders in the 2016 election and often speaks on racial injustices.
