Over 600 Marches For Science Kick Off Worldwide
For Earth Day, the world protested.
The March For Science in Washington D.C. kicked off Saturday, with over 600 satellite marches participating, according to a tweet by the march organizers.
The event, which also coincided with Earth Day, is supporting "robustly funded and publicly communicated science as a pillar of human freedom and prosperity" and also calling upon "political leaders and policy makers to enact evidence based policies in the public interest," according to the event's website.
Though the event's wording doesn't point fingers, the march is most likely in response to the Trump administration, which has been accused of silencing science driven departments of the government, as well as targeting federal science funds for budget cuts. Not to mention the slew of climate change deniers that are currently holding high-ranking positions in government.
In that way, the event has mobilized a sector of people, namely the scientific community, that is, the Washington Post writes, "pretty unprecedented."
The main march in D.C. will include speeches from physicists, scientists, engineers, neuroscientists and will be hosted by the DJ and musician Questlove.
