Hear Blood Orange Cover Philip Glass Live On Piano
Dev Hynes takes on a 1989 piece from the legendary composer.
Blood Orange creator Dev Hynes has long cited Philip Glass as an influence, including in his late 2013 FADER cover story. “The people I’ve looked up to my whole life, Philip Glass, Arthur Russell, whoever, maybe they were artists at some point, but they were also just doing lots of shit,” Hynes said in the interview.
Dev, like those heroes, also does lots of shit, and often the smaller one-offs and experiments can be just as compelling as his big statements. On Sirius XMU yesterday, Hynes hopped on the keys for a cover of Glass' "Metamorphosis: III," the centerpiece of a five-part suite featured on the composer's 1989 Solo Piano album. It's a beautiful, meditative take on the original, which you can find below.
