Goldie Suggested He Might Protest Fabric’s Closure By Melting Down An Award The Queen Gave Him
The DJ spoke with Channel 4 News.
Goldie has condemned the closure of London nightclub Fabric in a new interview with Channel 4 News. The legendary DJ and producer wryly floated a unique and damning protest: spiking the coffees of the Islington City Council, who voted last night to close Fabric, with his MBE award.
He said: “I’m wondering whether or not the likes of me, the likes of Jazzie B, Norman Jay, Pete Tong for that matter, should just trade our MBE’s in, melt them down and put them in a pencil-pushers coffee, so it can taste a little bit sweeter for him today, so he feels more successful in killing counter culture and culture itself.”
An MBE, or Member of the Order of the British Empire, is given to an individual by the Queen in recognition of service to their community. Goldie was awarded his in February.
“Slowly you look at the list of clubs [in London] that have closed down," Goldie continued,"and you look at Fabric as being, that’s the Goliath, man.” He lamented that the club's closure leaves a vacuum for young artists to develop their talents. "I think from a countrywide view [Fabric's closure] could have a lot of repercussions. If this goes down the way that it's going down, thank God I made music when I did, because God help the kids of tomorrow."
