This New Global Feminist Campaign Harnesses The ‘90s Girl Power Of The Spice Girls
#WhatIReallyReallyWant... is to improve the quality of life for women worldwide.
With its 20th anniversary this year, the classic '90s pop video for "Wannabe" by Spice Girls has been reinterpreted by the Global Goals Campaign to advocate for worldwide female empowerment in a new generation of girls. Turns out, what girls really really want in 2016 is to smash the patriarchy and improve the quality of their lives.
The rallying call of the campaign's launch video brings to light the pressing issues that still disproportionately affect women to this day – advocating for quality education, an end to violence, an end to child marriage and equal pay for equal work. It features artists from India, Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez from Sri Lanka, Seyi Shay from Nigeria, Gigi Lamayne and Monoea from South Africa, Larsen Thompson from the U.S., M.O. from the U.K., and Taylor Hatala from Canada.
The video was directed by MJ Delaney and has been endorsed by members of Spice Girls, including Victoria Beckham (you know, Posh) and Mel C (Sporty). The campaign calls on people to share a picture of #WhatIReallyReallyWant... on social media, and the visual response from around the world will then be presented to world leaders at the UN General Assembly in September.
