Justice For Flint: Watch Vic Mensa Perform A New Song, Janelle Monáe and Stevie Wonder Duet At Benefit
“16 Shots” gets its first ever performance.
Last night the city of Flint, Michigan hosted Justice For Flint, a concert organized by directors Ryan Coogler and Ava DuVernay to raise awareness to the city's lead-poisoned water crisis.
Vic Mensa performed a new song “16 Shots,” inspired by the killing and subsequent cover-up of Chicago teenager Laquan McDonald by city police (the song's title refers to how many times McDonald was shot). In the track, Mensa calls for the resignation of Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel, who has been facing a groundswell of backlash on social media since dashcam footage of McDonald's death emerged.
Janelle Monáe brought out Stevie Wonder during her set for a quick speech and duet. After condemning Michigan governor Rick Snyder for “ignoring” the poisoned city for two years, Wonder launched into his performance, with Monae joining him later for “Higher Ground.” Watch it below.
