Watch A’won Boyz Dab In Dashikis In Their “Commas Remix” Video
When Afrobeats met Trap.
One of my favorite discoveries of 2015 happened completely by accident: after letting a SoundCloud stream play for a few songs too long, I heard the slow rumble of an African drum come in over the Southside-produced beat for Future's "Fuck Up Some Commas." The track turned out to be "Commas Remix (Commas Come And Go)," A'won Boyz's ingenious Afrobeats interpolation of Future's similarly named hit. It wasn't the first "Commas" remix I'd heard, but certainly the only one I ever rewound.
The Brooklyn trio's irreverent green-screen video for "Commas," premiering on The FADER today, is equally perfect. It's got everything you could hope for—a dundun talking drum, artfully employed stacks of cash, dabbing in dashikis, and milly rocking in some traditional Nigerian outfits. "Fuck Up Some Commas" might have been last year's anthem, but "Commas Come And Go" is this year's inspiration.
"Living in the U.S., you understand that trap music is a big part of music now and one day, we came up with [our version of] the hook to Future's 'Commas' song jokingly. After posting a short clip on Twitter, fans began to demand a full song," the crew explained to The FADER over email. "We figured if the fans really want it, we could show them what we believe afro-trap could sound like. Thus, the 'Commas Remix (Commas Come and Go)' was born."
