Modern Baseball Premieres “The Thrash Particle”
Feeling jealous sucks.
Jealousy can make you do crazy shit. I know this, you know this, and Brendan Lukens, who sings and plays guitar in Modern Baseball, definitely knows this. "'The Thrash Particle' came about during a spiraling case of jealousy," he told FADER of his band's very good new song, debuting below. "Too jealous to understand how dumb I was being, I did and said things to put my relationships to the test. In time, my paranoia grew and I began to hurt those I wanted to be with the most."
Like the best Modern Baseball jams, "The Thrash Particle" is hinged on bleary, all-too-familiar scenes: bad concerts, drinking until you're honest, a crush who loves to leave you hanging. This one's maybe extra self-aware, though, with a meta-narrative about writing a song for someone: Is this the hook you wanted? Lukens wonders, knowing very well that it's not. It's a recognizable trope in songs like this, even vaguely recalling the I hope this song starts a craze section from a beloved track by unlucky-in-love fore-bearers Brand New. But it's still affecting in 2015—especially in a supremely catchy, undulating pop-punk package like this one.
"Any who," Lukens added in the same email. "Just trust the ones you love, y'all." Though this song isn't attached to a particular release yet, Modern Baseball's most recent LP, You're Gonna Miss It All, was released last year on slaying-right-now Boston label, Run For Cover.
