Earlier this week, Nigerian rapper Davido linked up with Meek Mill for "Fans Mi," a multilingual track that's equal parts hip-hop, afropop, and dancehall-inflected R&B. The song points to the future of African and American creative partnerships, but it wasn't the first time—in fact, it follows a recent trend of translatlantic collaborations. As African artists gain more global appeal, they're increasingly able to afford verses from American rappers. And, given the market that is the continent's one billion-plus population, it's not a bad idea for US artists to try build fanbases there, too.
