This new song from D.C.’s Dreamcast is a deep-dive into nighttime loneliness

“Late nights be the worst for me.”

Dreamcast is a super soulful young singer and producer out of Washington, D.C. At the moment, he’s got a handful of tracks out (a few of which were released on the D.C.-based independent and funk-focused label PPU), on which his gentle, straightforward croon can be heard hovering over funky bass guitar lines and two-step friendly drums. Most often, he’s singing about the more pleasant aspects of love and being with someone else. But with his new song “Throat,” premiering today on The FADER, he takes us elsewhere.

“I wrote this song immediately following the collapse of a relationship that relied heavily on physical touch and close proximity,” Dreamcast shared of the song over email. “As ‘Liquid Deep’ and ‘Floral Place’ had a more optimistic outlook on love, ‘Throat’ explores a bumpier, anxiety-filled space that fills a lonely room when your partner is no longer around.”

The song comes ahead of the release of the singer’s EP, expected to be completed this summer. Until then, he’s “exploring all currents that create my wave and sound — the good and the bad, the ups and the downs.” Listen to “Throat” above, and get familiar with Dreamcast here.
