As far as New York icons go, André Leon Talley is a heavy-hitter. From his early days at Andy Warhol’s Factory in the 1970s to his rise to Vogue's editor-at-large, Talley has been a revolutionary in style as well as one of the first prominent black voices of the industry. The forthcoming documentary The Gospel According To André chronicles the life of Talley, starting fans at his childhood in the segregated south to his rise as a sartorial treasure, and includes interviews from fashion staples Anna Wintour, Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, Valentino, Manolo Blahnik, and more.

The Kate Novack-directed feature seems warm and inspiring, full of rare archival footage that attests to Talley's larger-than-life personality and swagger. “You don't get up and say, ‘Look, I’m black and I'm proud,’” says Talley. “You just do it. And somehow it impacts the culture.” Watch the trailer above and catch the film in theaters May 25.
