Hailing from Weimar, Germany, Phosphenes is a three-piece indie rock group whose music brought me swiftly back to the sweet times of high school: slumber parties and secret night outings.
Premiering today on The FADER is "Girls Trip," the first single off the group's forthcoming debut album, Find Us Where We're Hiding (May 25), and their first official piece of music. Formed in 2017 by lead vocalist Julee Bee and producer Harry Starbuck, Phosphenes was the product of a years-long friendship that grew from similar music tastes. If "Girls Trip" is any indication, that taste is guitar-backed teenage nostalgia, with catchy riffs and soaring hooks. It wouldn't sound out of place in the prom scene of Sleepover, one of my all-time favorite teen flicks, or prime-Lindsay Lohan's Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, during that one montage of them changing clothes on a moving train.
"We love the impetuous and vintage atmosphere of the clip," Bee writes of the song via email. "The rough wildness and untamableness, that's the feeling we wanted to convey." It's a romantic, uncynical and triumphant window to the world, and after listening, you might just feel a bit more liberated. Listen above.
