Joshua Clancy, formerly (and maybe again?) one half of the visionary duo Elite Gymnastics, has released a 30-minute visual mix of new material under the alias Cyclan Jones. "Visual" is maybe a stretch — it's 30 minutes of manipulating the same strange photo of himself holding an acoustic guitar. The music is probably best contextualized as modern Odelay or Bran Van 3000 or Dr. Octagonecologyst or even Sagat "Funk Dat" — all records that were singular in their time and massively forward-looking in their aesthetic. Or Chuck D… or T.L.C.… — what if the sky was made up only of these bright stars?
Across eight or so tracks, Clancy's creative reinterpretation most notably revives a long-lost ’90s cadence that you'll recognize instantly but won't have heard used for years, much less its accompanying dedication to dispassionately rhyming multi-syllabics. Other songs feature nonsensical aphorisms, like, "You may not know this, but you are an orgasm. In fact, if there were no orgasms you wouldn't be here right now." Like so much of Clancy's past work, even if at first it scans as kinda dumb, this shit merits very careful examination.
