Netflix has canceled The Get Down after just one season on the streaming service. Variety reports that Baz Luhrmann's drama about the early days of hip-hop was plagued with production troubles from the start, and that the show never had the viewership of Netflix staples such as Orange Is The New Black or House of Cards (Netflix does not make their viewing numbers public).

The show was also the most expensive original series in Netflix history, with a price tag of $120 million to produce. Variety notes that that breaks down to $7.5 million per episode, which makes it one of the most costly television shows in history.

Baz Luhrmann released a statement on Facebook explaining why he felt he could no longer sustain work on the show. "...the simple truth is, I make movies. And the thing with movies is, that when you direct them, there can be nothing else in your life," he wrote, explaining that The Get Down had held him back from pursing his cinematic endeavors.
